The Borders and
Corners
The Borders are the edge of the Grid – beyond
the borders is therefore ‘off the map’. The
borders can represent points of entry and exit to and from
the Grid – this could mean waking, starting a day and
retiring at night, opening and closing a project, or, with
a longer perspective, birth and death.
All projects which we undertake in life can be said to
begin with entry at Point (
A
) a neutral start point on the left border from which the
project develops in polarity and power as it progresses,
creating a life cycle or trace of the event. The grid
below shows such a trace which records the changing
chemistry of a meeting – a negotiation for example
– which begins well and moves through various
difficulties but recovers to end in success in Quadrant 3
and an ‘exit’ at point B.

Corners
The corners represent extreme endpoints of
existence:
·
Point 4, a ‘triumphant’ realisation of a
notional maximum power of positive expression;
·
Point 3, a pure positivity without visible
expression;
·
Point 2, a diffused, utterly effete negativity, a
theoretical complete and hopeless passivity; and,
·
Point 1, an unrealisable mega-tyranny of extreme negative
power.
Individually, we find these endpoints difficult to
understand or even approach in our understanding.

One of the features of the Polarity Grid is that it defines
an arena in which we can plot the trace of our life –
it can be a notional ‘day in the life’, or it
can be a more significant attempt to develop our own Delphi
Project with a serious effort to move to a higher and more
fulfilling life path. The Grid still represents a
limitation – reflecting the natural limits which are
part of being human – but it also invites a
speculation and exploration of what it means to expand or
move beyond our own personal Grid.
